Frequently Asked Questions

A food allergy occurs when your body’s immune system doesn’t recognise a certain food and mistakenly sees it as harmful. Your body reacts by producing chemicals for which the symptoms can range from being very mild to severe and can even be fatal.

  • Milk (mostly in children)
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Wheat
  • Some fruit and vegetables

In the UK, almost two adults in every 100 people have food allergies, and about five to eight children per 100 have a food allergy.

Many children can outgrow a food allergy, however in adults, outgrowing a food allergy is less common

Tests should be carried depending on the type of allergy:
  • If the symptoms developed quickly (an IgE-mediated food allergy) – a skin-prick test or a blood test can be suitable.
  • If the symptoms developed more slowly (non-IgE-mediated food allergy) – the best way to identify the allergy is with an elimination diet. Do not attempt a food elimination diet by yourself without discussing it with a qualified allergy dietitian.

Be careful with the following tests as many claims to detect allergies but should be avoided as they have been proven to be untrustworthy.

  • Hair analysis – claims to detect food allergies by taking a sample of your hair.
  • Vega testing – claims to detect allergies by measuring changes in your electromagnetic field.

At Dietitian Fit, a food allergy dietitian can help you identify a food allergy you may have and help you manage it.

Unlike a food allergy, a food intolerance is not caused by an immune response and is usually more common. It happens when a food cannot be digested by our body properly.

  • Lactose found in milk and dairy product
  • Gluten
  • Caffeine
  • Fructose found in some fruits and vegetables

In the UK, it is estimated that about 9 million suffer from a food intolerance symptom.

There is no treatment known for food intolerance but symptoms can improve and be managed. Some supplements may also help in digesting the foods and reduce the symptoms.

There are multiple tests available such as blood tests and hair analysis, but these tests are not supported by scientific evidence and are not recommended by the British Dietary Association (BDA) at the moment.

If you suspect that you or someone you know has a food intolerance, gluten sensitivity, or other difficulties with food, a food intolerance nutritionist can help you identify your intolerances and guide you through the right steps of an elimination diet

Here at Dietitian Fit, our qualified dietitians can help you understand the foods that cause your symptoms and help you successfully to manage your symptoms.

What’s more, we will advise you on how to avoid confirmed and suspected allergens and intolerances and maintain a healthy and balanced diet to meet your nutritional needs.

Without the supervision of a qualified nutritionist, any form of dietary rejection can be very dangerous because of the risk of losing important nutrients. This is especially true when key food groups are excluded.
