Sports Dietitian
FAQs
They are not the same. A sports dietitian can be called a sports nutritionist, but a sports nutritionist cannot be called a sports dietitian. A sports dietitian will have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in nutrition & dietetics, and be registered with the Health & Care professionals Council (HCPC). However, sports nutritionist’s do not require a undergraduate or postgraduate degree (although this can be an option), and they are unable to register with the HCPC, unless they have a dietetics degree. Most sports nutrition education programs are to an undergraduate level such as sports and exercise science or exercise physiology, and they can register to be part of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR), which is a voluntary register to accredit qualified and experienced sports & exercise nutritionists.
You want to ensure that the sports dietitian is qualified with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related subject, or even a master’s degree. Look for a sports dietitian that is credited with being part of the SENR, as this shows additional professional competency. Looking at the speciality of the sports dietitian will ensure the professional you work with has completed additional training and has expertise in the specific area you want support with. For example, if you have a certain medical condition or specific diet to follow, you want to ensure the dietitian you work with is comfortable in these areas and has experience with previous similar clients. The sports dietitian you work with may be specialised in specific types of sports such as endurance training for ultra marathons or swimming, or perhaps more for strength based training, so that is something to keep in mind, depending on your goals. A sports dietitian should provide personalised support with a tailored nutrition plan for you, working around your schedule and requirements.
A sports dietitian will have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in nutrition & dietetics, and will also be registered with the Health & Care professionals Council (HCPC) – you can check their registration on the HCPC website.
This can depend largely on your goals. Most of what can be done in-person can also be done online. However, if you are looking for body composition analysis, choosing an in-person consultation will allow this to be done. You may also find it helpful to meet your dietitian face to face for the first appointment, then switch to online sessions for follow ups, for convenience.
Ensure that you complete the forms that will be sent to you at the time of booking. These take a few minutes and are done online and will provide your sports dietitian with some information needed to help tailor the consultation. Any relevant questions you wish to ask, be sure to write these down so that you are prepared and can get the most out of our consultation.
Yes, you can use health insurance to cover the fees. We accept the majority of health insurance providers such as WPA & BUPA, but please get in touch by phone or email to check, and how you can book via health insurance cover.
This can largely depend on your specific goals and if there are any barriers that may impact progress. For example, if you have a goal to run a half marathon in a certain time, being realistic with your goal in the time frame given is important, to allow yourself enough time for trialling nutrition and hydration techniques leading up to the event. Results may be seen in a matter of weeks, though it can often take months to implement and practice a routine consistently, to see long term and sustained results.
